Intermodal

« Back to Glossary Index

The fact of moving cargo by using 2 or more different mode of transports without handling the freight items individually.
The most common type of intermodal transport equipment is the shipping container – the container is loaded with cargo at departure and may then travel by road, rail and ocean with the cargo remaining inside the container until it reaches the destination of this intermodal transport.
A semi-trailer driven to a station and then lifted onto a train is another example of intermodal transport.
